More bang for the buck. June 18, 2010 Alvaro Kretschmann (USA) Arma series is a kind of game which create totally opposite opinions, that means or you totally fall in love with the game or you really hate it. For my personal opinion this is not the common type of game on the shooter genre. If you analyze the shooters are basically a interactive war movie, that means heavily scripted action where the gamer spend most of the time running and gunning in narrow corridors, (even in a open environment)fighting with almost endless spawning enemies until you reach certain waypoint. To this, is added a cinematic animation trying to provide certain realism on the game style. So there is no strategy tactics , also the gameplay is very short and the re playability is almost null, until you use on multi-players. In this case you will find crowds of dudes jumping, running and shooting endless rounds on mostly small maps.
However Arma games series are mainly a MILITARY SIMULATOR, including a SHOOTER, a AIRCRAFT-HELICOPTER-VEHICLE SIMULATOR all in one big game, where real tactics and strategy are the key to achieve goals. The map is huge and there is no invisible walls or corridors to follow waypoints like occurs in another popular military FPS, and you have also limited gear capacity so every bullet count and is very easy to get killed if you imitate the same behavior like you use normally playing games like BF-BC2 or MWF2, that mean running and gunning.
If we talk about the re playability is totally assured, because you can repeat the campaign over and over again and you will find different enemy behavior because the AI is independent and they literally learn of your mistakes by changing the tactics too. Also thanks to one of the most actives communities on the Internet, you can add different DLCs without no cost and this keep the game fresh for years. For example I started one recently downloaded campaign playing like SAS Spec-Ops and to achieve only the objective I spend in total 15 hours of game, because it was a stealth mission and "I had to wait" until dusk to approach the objective without been noticed. This small example shown ARMA like a real time chess where the patience, the planning, tactics and the use of a team work will receive the reward if you are a thinker strategist.
Personally I really like ARMA1, ARMA2 and I have already pre-ordered Operation Arrowhead and I think is one of the best simulators franchise up to the date and is a really good deal too, considering the price for what you get. You will love it too specially if you are military buff and you are tired of boring kiddies FPS.
Best Game Ever May 10, 2010 Scott Hankins (Los Angeles,CA USA) This game is one of the best i have ever played.Takes a bit i get it all down, but you will love it when you do.
Best War Simulation April 27, 2010 R. Logan (Chicago) This is a war-simulation pc game. What men & women in the Armed Forces witness & experienced are rolled into
this sim-game.
PRO:
- lots of controls, no restrictions, can hop over waist-high fence, lean-peek, 4-level of difficulties, customization, etc
- lots of missions = lots of replayability, lots of mods to enhance further the experience from discerning gamers since Operation Flashpoint
- very active modding communities, suggest going to [...] and become a member, get A.C.E. mod and look for Six-Updater for ARMA to look for updates for your A.C.E. mod.
- lots of choices in weapons, vehicles, terrains, time of day can be altered, sounds (most realistic weapon/bullet/vehicle sounds in any video game)from actual weapons/bullets/vehicles vs Hollywood infused sounds,i.e CODMW-series
- beautiful environments ( more can be added with mods)
CON:
- heavy pc requirements not just videocard but CPU also (see specs) I get 26fps on day maps 17fps at night (unless I overclock my CPU to 3.6Ghz, then I get a 20FPS) at all high-settings
- out of the box needs updates (suggest getting ACE mod also), you'll have a negative experience right away if you don't update first
- controls can be overwhelming at first, but doing the tutorials will get you there eventually...after all, the game already skipped the 4-6months bootcamps.
- doesn't come with a marriage counselor and baby-sitting services
My Specs: Win7Pro 32-bit/ ABIT IP35 Pro v1.1 BIOS v.16beta09/ Intel C2D E8400 Batch Q748A223 3.0-3.6Ghz /Xigmatek HDT-RS1283/ 4GB Corsair CM2X2048-6400C5DHX 5-5-5-18 1.80V ver4.1/ CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX 620W/ CM Stacker 830SE/Creative Labs Fatal1ty ProGamer/ Sapphire Radeon HD 5850/ Dell UltraSharp 2407FPW-HC
Again, suggest making friends at [...], be courteous, be humble, donate and download some mods, try for a month before trying another one. The mods to get are the A.C.E mods and it's components. Ask a friend with high-speed connection to download for you. Then get [...] and let it run overnight. It's worth every wait.
A gem if you enjoy the search April 18, 2010 MoT (Fiji) I remember the old Operation Flashpoint that Bohemia Interactive created and how I couldn't play the game with my pathetic rig of a computer at the time. I also had precious little patience to investigate further and so missed out on just how deep it was. Now that hardware is no longer an issue, though you need a hefty rig to do this "sim" justice, I find that this is a gem, a diamond if you will, if you persevere to find it. If you're looking for run-and-gun Call of Duty or Battlefield style of game play then you should pass on this because you'll be disappointed. The more popular titles out there are filled with bunny hopping "realism" that's a joke but one that I'm sure the developers are laughing all the way to the bank with. ArmA 2 is a very different cat where one shot will either wound you good or send you to the great beyond. I've spent countless hours honing my skills with the command structure just getting the hang of the keyboard but it pays off. After applying the VERY mandatory patches and if you hunt for and apply the legion of third party MODS and add-ons you have a very immerse environment. The base map out of the box covers over two hundred plus kilometers of modeled territory! Some of the sound effects from the add-on packages would make me jump out of my seat from the surround sound sensation. If you have the coin you could plop down some bones for the Track-IR system and really get into it. There is a diamond here that I hope Bohemia Interactive will continue to improve upon and hopefully incorporate the work being produced by their user community. If you're a serious sim or game player, and not easily put off by minor bugs or annoyances, and want to engage what appears to be a more mature user base, then you'll indeed enjoy this. I give it five stars for the pleasure my persistence gave me and took one star off for the overall rating due to bugs out of the box.
Very enjoyable game February 22, 2010 Christopher L. Crowe (WEST MILFORD, NEW JERSEY, US) I play many Military games and have found this is the best realistic teamwork game ever.
It is not a quick play game. You need a few hours to experience the full effect of the game.
For serious military Sim gamers this is highly recommended.
